Description:
The alkaline ponds and lakes in Plitvice are characterised by a very high amount of calcium. When a dead tree falls into the water, it is soon covered by a calcium-layer, which protects the dead tree from quick further decay and rotting. This leads often to spectacular sceneries with scattererd dead trees under water, which are clearly visible in the clear blue and turqoise lakes .
