Barn Swallows coming to drink at lake - Boerenzwaluwen komen drinken - Hirundo rustica
This picture was made in the late evening at Vransko Lake, in Croatia. These swallows were flying above the lake and came to drink, before flying to their roost in the reedbeds.
Vransko Lake is the biggest natural lake of Croatia. The Northwest side of the lake has huge reedbeds, which are home to healthy populations of most of the typical reedbirds. Purple and grey herons are breeding birds, as well as Nightheron, Little Bittern, Pygmy Cormorants, Little Crake, and Great Reed Warblers. In august hundreds of thousands of Swallows and martins use the reedbeds as sleeping roosts, which causes an amazing spectacle in the late evening and early morning.
