Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot - Sclaters Spechtpapegaai - Micropsitta pusio
This is the smallest parrot in the world. The bird measures only 8.3 cm, and has the size of a goldcrest!
It feeds mainly on small mushrooms and fungi. On this image, you can see the adult pair.
I photographed this pair of birds with their young at their old nestsite. Jamil told me he found a nest in a termite mound in a small tree at the forest edge. But he also warned me that the birds were about to fly out. The next day, I was first pretty frustrated that the young had meanwhile apperently flown out, as after hours of waiting not one bird showed up... But the just before the sun went down, the entire family flew in and before they went to sleep in their nest, they hung a few minutes around on the termite mound and foraged on the branches of their nesting tree.
