Clavate Tortoise Beetle Larva -
Schildpadkever Larve
-
Plagiometriona clavata

Image ID:
5922
Date:
27/07/2014
Location:
Dead Horse Ranch State Park,
Arizona,
USA
Description:

The weird larvae from the Tortoise Beetle, Plagiometriona clavata carries carry their excrements above their back. The last abdominal segment has a special 'fecal fork' which permits the attachment of dried fecal matter. This 'anal fork' filled with feces presumably offers a degree of protection through camouflage.
