Common Woodlouse -
Kelderpissebed
-
Oniscus asellus

Image ID:
5998
Date:
18/10/2015
Location:
Bruinbos,
Belgium
Description:

The woodlouse has a shell-like exoskeleton, which it must progressively shed as it grows. Adult woodlice lose their armor or exoskeleton approximately once every four weeks. Firstly the back half is shed and about twelve hours to three days later the front half. They eat their own exoskeleton, because it contains a lot of chalky nutrients.

The individual on this image has just shed the back half of his exoskeleton. The fact that the individual is very fragile during this stage, led to the fact that he was very quiet and dind't move. This allowed me to make a field stack. The image is composed of 15 images, stacked in Photoshop.
