Endemic ground beetle from South France on the run - Carabus hispanus dromensis - Endemische schallebijter uit Zuid Frankrijk
Carabus hispanus is a huge shiny ground beetle has a localized distribution in the South of France. Typical is it's shiny appearance, with changing colours, depending on the angle you look at it. From above this beetle seems reddish and form aside it looks rather golden-coloured to greenish. It is one of the bigger representatives of the genus Carabus in France. They can measure up to 36 mm.
This individual belongs to the subspecies dromensis and is slightly smaller compared to the individuals found more in the Western part of its range (belonging to the subspecies latissimus found in the Montagne Noire).
