This species is also known in literature as Carabus arcensis or Eucarabus arcensis (Turin) or Morphocarabus arvensis (Rautenstrauch). Carabus arvensis is a widespread Palearctic species, that shows a lot of colour variations. This individual found in Les Vosges, belongs to the subspecies schrikelli. He shows a typical 'coppery bronze' colour, but has reddish thighs, which is quite unusual. In this forest in the Southern Part of Les Vosges, about half of the population consists of 'red-legged' individuals. These individuals with red femur belong to the forma individua 'ruficus'.
