King Bird of Paradise - Koningsparadijsvogel - Cicinnurus regius
The King Bird of Paradise is the tiniest representative of it's genus and measures only 16 centimeters. Despite it's flashy red colour and it's very vocal behaviour, the bird often remains difficult to observe, even at close range. One of the main reasons is that the tiny bird always calls and displays from vines at mid altidtude, about 10 to 15 metres high - and often remains in the thick foliage of dense vines, which are often curled around a large forest tree.
According to my opinion, the King Bird of Paradise is one of the most delicate and beautiful coloured and designed birds in the entire world! Combine it's mindblowing appearance with an amazing display in the middle of a primary tropical rainforest, and you get one of the avian highlights every serious birder should be able to observe once in his life! Though not the rarest, most localized or most sought after species, this is one of the best birds I've ever seen. I spent two full mornings at a display tree, after already having spent three mornings for this bird on Salawati... And I still don't regret it, as I was able to get some decent pictures and I could enjoy the bird for several hours.
