Lake Habema wrapped in clouds - Habema meer in de wolken
This picture was made a little above Lake Habema (3224 m), at an altitude of about 3400 metres above sea-level. The area around the lake consists of a vast area of boggy grasslands adjacent to the lake, and steep slopes with dwarf trees and scrubs. On the slopes, open boggy areas, are also encountered frequently. Further away from the lake, the hills are covered with mossy forest.
One the foreground of picture you can see smaller trees and dwarf scrub. On the background the peaks of the Snow Mountains are visible. At the moment I took the picture dark clouds packed together and fog came up around the lake and it's surrouding hills.
About ten minutes after I took the pciture, heavy rain started falling and we got completely soaked. This was our daily faith on our birdwatching visit to Lake Habema. On some days, we were even surprised several times a day by heavy showers. The Central Higlands and the Snow Mounatins are known for there very wet climate, almost all year round.
