Middle Spotted Woodpecker -
Middelste Bonte Specht
-
Dendrocopos medius

Image ID:
3159
Date:
22/07/2010
Location:
Saly-Lator,
Bükk Mountains,
Hungary
Description:

Middle Spotted Woodpecker is an indicator species of old growth forest and old forest stands. It is less dependent for its foraging behaviour on dead wood as it mainly feeds in the canopy on moss-covered large horizontal branches of big old trees. It shows a strong preference for old oaks with a large and well developed crown.
