Description:
Detail of the thorax and shields of a wintering Carabus nemoralis. The ground beetle is carrying a mite on its thorax. Mites are quite commonly found on Carabus species, and one individual carrying around up to four or five mites is not exceptional.
The Ground Beetle was hidden under the bark of a log. As the temperature was still cold at night and during the day the sun had warmed up the place, this individual was covered in condensation drops.
