The Plitvice Lakes are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Plitvice National Park is a world famous site, particularly known for it's blue alkaline lakes and spectacular waterfalls surrounded by beautiful forest.
Nowadays the lakes are populated by large shoals of Pearl Roach (Scardinius erythrophtalmus) and Chub (Leuciscus cephalus), which both belong to the carp family. They are typical fish found in slow streaming lowland rivers and lakes with a very rich vegetation. Plitvice lakes were never the natural habitat of these species. Carp, who amongst other things feed on the fish roe, pose a significant threat to the lake trout and have overtaken their habitat.
