The genus Micropsitta or the Pygmy-Parrots contains the smallest Parrots in the World. They forage on small branches and trunks in the mid story of the forest and feed on lichens and bark fungi. They roost and nest in cavities that they chewed into termittaria or rotten stubs. The genus is confined to New Guinea and adjacent islands. Their length varies form 9 cm (Red-breasted Pygmy-parrot) to 8.3 cm (Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot).
The Red-breasted Pygmy-Parrot is a montane species found all over the mountains of New Guinea and as well as on the Solomon and some of the Moluccan islands.
