The Speckled Dasyure belongs to the family of the Dasyuridae, which is species rich and has it's greatest diversity in the drier regions of Australia. The Speckled Dasyure is a Papuan mountain endemic, whose range is confined to the central mountains. It is found in the higher mossy forests above 2000 metres
