Nameri National Park lays on the broder of the alluvial plains of Assam, North East India. It is situated along the Jhia Borelli River. The park contains impressive vast evergreen forest areas, interspersed with more open swamps with a grassy vegetation. The park contains both flat alluvial forest and hill forest. The park holds very high densities of Asian elephants, as well as healthy populations of other large mammals, such as Gaur, Sambar, Leopard and Tiger. Scarce, elusive and threatened bird species, such as White-winged Duck, Ibisbill (winter migrator), Pallas's Fish-Eagle, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Blue-naped Pitta and White-cheecked Hill Partridge are all found within the Park.
On our second day, me and my wife made a boat-trip on the Jhia-Borelli River. Its is a side-river of the Brahmaputra, but it is still a very impressive and large river, with an untamed and natural charachter: the river has overgrown islands, small rapids, sandy and stony river banks and islands. It lies on the border of Nameri National Park, where the forested hills and primary rainforest starts. The area is particularly good for the wintering Ibisbills, which are still present untill the beginning of april. Long-billed Plover can also be found along the river and other interesting species such as Pallas's Fish-Eagle, River Lapwing, River Tern, Small Pratincole and Great Thick-knee. Rafting in a small boat on the wild river in a majestic landscape is an unforgettable experience.
