Traditional garden house of the Arfaks - Traditioneel tuinhuis van de Arfaks
This is a typical traditional gardenhouse of the Arfak Mountains in Papua. The gardenhouse is a traditional wooden construction, and is surrounded by a small garden where fruit and vegetables are cultivated. Inside the house there is on each side a long strip which is used to make fire during the cold and humid nights. The garden houses are kept outside the village and lay in the middle of the forest. This garden was situated at a one hour walk from Sioubri village, but some of these traditional gardens can be found several hours walking form the village, where the owner lives.
We spent a few nights sleeping in the garden house. The small table on the foreground was built for the birdwatchers and is used as a dining table.
