Ward's Trogon - Wards Trogon - Harpactes wardi
The bird on the image is a male.
Eaglenest and Bompu Camp in particular is one of the best places of India to see the enigmatic Wards Trogon. Though the Trogon is seen at most elevations in the Park, one of the best places to see the bird is around Sunderview, where we saw a pair in the early morning. We had also a brief view from a female at Eaglenest Pass (2900 metres), but the birds are definitely hard to find when not calling.
Ward's Trogon is known from the eastern Himalayas in China (few old records from the seventies in Yunnan), Bhutan (uncommon and local), India (Arunachal Pradesh, where it is apparently local and rare), Myanmar (formerly locally common in north, but there are no recent records and it is thought to be generally uncommon) and Vietnam (previously common on Fan Si Pan, north-west Tonkin, but there are no recent records despite intensive searching). The species is listed by IUCN as near-threatened.
